With thousands of free programs offered at Central Library and the other 60 branch libraries in Brooklyn, the Calendar of Events is a major monthly publication that is produced in-house at BPL. We were asked to make recommendations on how this publication could be enhanced to make it easier to find events not only at Central Library but also a person’s local branch, bring attention to special performances taking place at the Dweck Auditorium at Central Library and most importantly make the process of creating the calendar of events easier for the in-house team.

SKAGGS undertook a large-scale redesign of all the informational and wayfinding signage for the Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Library. The existing signage wasn’t accurate after many years of changes to the functional layout of the library. In addition, signs were hard to read due to the material and the content was organized alphabetically, rather than by floor.
Our new signage package resolves all of these issues and brings a fresh new look to the library, in keeping with Brooklyn Public Library’s brand identity. After many months of surveying, designing, field testing, and production, the new signage was installed.

The new signage uses a four-color scheme that corresponds to areas on a plan of the library, allowing visitors to visually identify a color with the part of the library they’re interested in. We removed all extraneous information so the signage is easy to understand.
