Papaya King

Since 1932, Papaya King’s landmark location in Manhattan has been serving their famous frankfurters, tropical drinks and smoothies to native New Yorkers and visitors alike. We gave the King’s crown a much-needed polish.

Identity

The original Papaya King “face” looked dated and the typography didn’t relate to the location’s rich history. We addressed both of these issues by creating an updated face that “smiles” more naturally, and paired him with a custom typeface created from the iconic neon signage that exists on the storefront.

Collateral

Papaya King’s existing packaging, lacked the uniqueness that makes Papaya King, well, Papaya King. We updated the collateral with snappy facts, quotes from notable sources, and a friendly reminder that Papaya King is “The Original”. Drink cups, take-away bags, and frankfurter trays that are simple to store and durable for take-away were designed for customers to enjoy.

Website

The biggest draw of the website, aside from “Papaya King Television,” and the mouth-watering menus illustrated by Chris Lyons, is the devilishly addictive “Franken-Maker” competition that allows users to enter their frankfurter-topping ideas and then vote for the best one. The user with the most votes each week gets the chance to have their topping featured as the “Royal Frank,” and served as a special at Papaya King!

Environmental

Papaya King’s interior hadn’t been updated and as it seemed…cleaned since the 1960’s. The restaurant was renovated, but everything that makes Papaya King great was preserved. SKAGGS designed new signs that hang inside the store to relay lovably interesting facts to customers, new menus were created to simplify the ordering process, and cut vinyl decals made use of the HUGE new windows that spill light onto the corner of 86th Street and 3rd Ave.

Video

With Papaya King being closed for renovation the frankfurter-eating masses would need to get their Alexander Poulos fix. That’s where Papaya King Television comes in. SKAGGS filmed Alexander Poulos and every Friday during the renovation released a new Episode to show progress on the work and answer any questions sent in through the “Ask Alexander” feature on the Papaya King Website.
