My Guest Teaching Experience

I just remember thinking: “First day of school: Cold, cold, cold” I had forgotten my mittens in NY and my hands were purple when I walked into the schools library to present the assignment. I badly needed my gloves! I drank tea and more tea to warm me up until I started to sweat and stink :-( oh my… that’s exactly what I feared the most; a stinking teacher with bad mouth breath! So I ran to the corner store and bought the strongest sugar free bubble gum available and wool mittens!
For 2 weeks I taught first, second and third year students in the Graphic Design Department at the Myndlistaskolinn á Akureyrar (the Arts and Crafts Collage in Akureyri). The assignment was to create a high-end brand for an organic chocolatier that had 2 locations – one in Akureyri and one in Reykjavik. The concept for the brand had to reflect it’s high-end and unique quality but also had to reflect it’s organic and sustainable approach. For example, the brand would only be sold on premise where the chocolate was made and packed.
Following were the deliverables:
First Year:
- Come up with a name (had to be a person’s name)
- Create a mood board(s) that captured the brand
- Design and develop a stationery program
- Create stickers
- Design the packaging for the truffles
Second Year:
- Come up with a name (had to be a person’s name)
- Create a mood board(s) that captured the brand
- Design and develop a stationery program
- Create stickers
- Design the packaging for the truffles and a brochure that goes with it
- Design the packaging for three flavors of chocolate bars
- Design the container for hot coco
Third Year:
- Come up with a name (had to be a person’s name)
- Create a mood board(s) that captured the brand
- Design and develop a stationery program
- Create stickers
- Design the packaging for the truffles and a brochure that goes with it
- Design the packaging for three flavors of chocolate bars
- Design the container for hot coco
- Design the shopping Bag
- Design the exterior signage
By clicking on the images, you can enjoy the fabulous work the students delivered – I was surprised how very different the final outcome looked. There was no trend or copying one another, which I thought was very refreshing! Just as an FYI – everyone worked very hard and no one went to bed before 3am and some didn’t even go home before the finals. Nice work by all the students and thank you for working so hard. I do hope you are all proud of your work.
