Let There Be Light
Posted by newsamyork on December 09, 2009 at 1:21pm

I recently got a new camera (Canon S90) and while I’m no expert (and admittedly a beginner), I’ve taken on a whole new appreciation for light and the art of photography. While looking through iphoto I noticed a common theme – the light…THE LIGHT!! Honestly, I can’t take a lot of credit because on most of the flicks I’ve literally gone – “point-shoot-move on”, but I will say that the S90 is flippin’ amazing when it comes…

And the Winner is… Sophie Theallet!
Posted by newsamyork on November 18, 2009 at 10:57am

I had the pleasure of interviewing France born - Brooklyn based designer - Sophie Theallet back in Feburary for the Celeste Duquesne website. Sophie was fantastic to interview and is one of the realest, warmest people I’ve met in fashion. Her Fall 2009 collection was absolutely beautiful - her clothes have no fuss, no frills - just simple and sophisticated detail. It comes as no surprise that she won the coveted…

Ice Ice Baby - Adventures in Reykjavik

When I found out that we were taking a last minute business trip to the 300k population filled land of Fire and Ice, I was truly blown away. In all honesty the only thing I knew about Iceland were Vikings, the eternal daylight in the summer, the everlasting darkness in the winter and of course the cold. We touched down in Reykjavik…

Tokyo Tokyo!

I’ve dreamed about Japan and Tokyo almost all of my design conscious life. To me it seemed like the ultimate neon lighted, old mixed with new, technologically advanced metropolis. Last week, I took the trip of a lifetime to Tokyo with my good friend Jenna G, who was also on tour with the Qemists.
The 14 hour flight with…

Pentagram’s Vibe

Pentagram redesigning one of the most iconic hip hop magazines to date…Who’d have thunk it!? It’s not often you see really well designed Hip Hop publications . So when I found out that Pentagram have redesigned Vibe (hip-hop’s premier magazine) for their 15 anniversary, I was pleasantly surprised and even more impressed having seen the outcome here.
Working with Vibe editor-in-chief Danyel Smith, art director Mark Shaw,…

The Revolution will be Fabulous
Posted by newsamyork on May 08, 2008 at 3:36pm

I’m all about random designer luxury goods. Not so much the handbags, umbrellas and cell phone cases. More like KVD’s Chanel Surfboard and my Mark Jacobs Bean Bags (courtesy of Cara). I see them not as luxury goods - but more like works of fashion art. When I came across Peter Gronquist’s latest exhibition at the Gallery 1998 in LA, I positively leapt out of my chair…

Five Franklin Place
Posted by newsamyork on April 29, 2008 at 9:52am

Ahhh Tribeca, home to the Tribeca Film Festival, The Odeon, a celebrity or two, SKAGGS and now one of the coolest and sexiest buildings I’ve seen in a long time. Construction has begun on a 20-story residential tower on 5 Franklin Place and is designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel of UNStudio.
It doesn’t look like much now, but the renderings are absolutely gorgeous.…

Bad Comma
Posted by newsamyork on April 24, 2008 at 9:57am

We have several “Eagle Eyes” at SKAGGS and we totally understand the importance of having work proof read, although you’ve probably noticed a few typos on the blog. I have an insanely bad habit of being liberal with the comma. Not sure why…maybe because I’ve yet to fully grasp its correct usage. Anyway, I came across illustrator David Lanham. He was commissioned to do an illustration for Weiner +…

Science Machine

Science Machine from Chad Pugh on Vimeo.
How long does it take to create a complex illustration? Chad Pugh documented the process and put it all together in a very cool video.
The video is a condensed time lapse of screenshots over a several month period. Total physical drawing time is close to 40…

David Shrigley

I came across David Shrigley’s work and absolutely love it! While his drawings are my favorites, the photographs are cool too…not sure I’d get a tattoo though.

With their decadent confetti made of diced dollar bills (totaling a hundred dollars) to their S*** From Paris (a company dedicated in collecting, recycling and selling Parisian dog defections), it’s kind of difficult to describe what they do. I guess you could say that French duo Ivan Duval and Jean Sebastien Ides are in the business of ideas. They create/invent wonderfully quirky but well designed products, some of which is…

Karl Lagerfeld + Grand Theft Auto 4
Posted by newsamyork on April 10, 2008 at 10:29am

Just when I thought that the video game world couldn’t get any better, it was announced this week that Karl Lagerfeld, hater of children, lover of fish and creator of some of the most beautiful pieces today, will be playing a role in the much anticipated Grand Theft Auto 4. He’ll DJ on air at the game’s K109 The Studio station. Rockstar Games has produced a Lagerfeld…

Think Like The Audience…*ahem*

In advertising and design you’re constantly told by the client and your inner Mad Man to think like the audience…It seems in their pursuit of ultimate audience thinking Via Group really did go the whole hog. Their work on the new Maidenform backless bra ad seems to prove this. I’m not sure what bothers me most…The dudes in bras, the fact that their “bras were too small…

Minted
Posted by newsamyork on April 02, 2008 at 10:34am

With all of the recession talk, tightening of belts and general decline of the dollar, talk of currency and finance can be depressing. The Royal Mint positively brightened my day with the announcement of the newly designed UK currency. Who knew 50p could look so good!?
The Shield of the Royal Arms has been given a contemporary treatment and its whole has been cleverly split among…

The Design Police
Posted by newsamyork on January 15, 2008 at 10:37am

There are many bad mistakes in design, some are unintentional and others are just poor judgment.
designpolice.org aims to highlight these mistakes and bring bad design to justice, with a handy little print out and stick kit, with alerts that include “Run The Spell Check” and Microsoft Word Is Not A Design Tool” you’ll be sure never to make the same mistake twice. Genius!
