Chipotle Grilled Chicken
Posted by Joe Guzman on July 29, 2008 at 1:54pm

If, like us, you’re addicted to Hell’s Kitchen, Iron Chef, Top Chef, and you watch the Food Network religiously (we understand), then we’ve got a treat in store: a grilled chicken recipe by SKAGGS’ very own Joe Guzman. We’ve had so many requests for this during cookout season that we decided it deserves its very own one-off feature. Enjoy!

I Love Fontshop

Ever thought about making your own typeface? Well I have, but font creation software is mad-loot. FontShop has thankfully built a simple (and FREE!) online application that lets you build href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Font">fonts out of simple building blocks.
Oh the wonders of the Interweb.
FontStruct lets you quickly and easily create fonts constructed out of geometrical shapes, which are arranged in a grid pattern, like tiles…

The Destruction of Identity Design II
Posted by Joe Guzman on April 02, 2008 at 2:08pm
Brand New pulled a hell of an April Fool’s joke yesterday. Showing a redesigned Ford logo, they claimed that they had unveiled some of it at the annual NY Auto Show.
Having not gone to the Auto Show this year (I have the past 2 years), I DID fall for it initially, even though I knew it was April Fool’s day.
This further proved my point that companies are ready, willing and able…

The Destruction of Identity Design
Posted by Joe Guzman on March 14, 2008 at 2:09pm

Everyone has a morning routine when they arrive at work: check email, voicemail, news, etc. Part of my morning routine is checking out what is going on in the design world (and yes every word is a link).
If anything catches my eye I’ll take a look, but most of the time its a click here and there for…

Helvetica. The Film.

Type dorks unite.
That’s what I felt the theme of this weekend was, well for me at least. I traveled up to my alma mater, RIT, for a screening of Helvetica this weekend, but this weekend was about more than just Helvetica, it was about appreciating typography in general and I loved every second of it.

Typography on the Web…
Posted by Joe Guzman on March 15, 2007 at 2:20pm
...well, it usually sucks. Lines of text that have FAR too many characters, justified paragraphs that have rivers wider and longer than the Amazon, weeping widows, ludicrous leading, and kerning that will make you want to crawl under your covers and cry for weeks on end are sights that everyone can see all over the Web. For too long we’ve had to deal with difficult to read passages of text. Its time to take good typography to…

Helvetica. The Film.
Posted by Joe Guzman on March 15, 2007 at 2:18pm

Love it or hate it Helvetica is undoubtedly one of the most used, most versatile, and influential typefaces ever designed. My love affair with Helvetica began in college and continues until today. Although I’ve recently begun a fling with Akzidenz Grotesk that I don’t see ending anytime soon. Sorry Helvetica, but you’re just too perfect for me, I like someone that’s a bit more rough around the edges.

Akzidenz Grotesk

I’ve just now come to love this typeface. My appreciation for it came after seeing the 1978 Graphic Standards Manual for the NYC Subway System, designed by Massimo Vignelli. For years I had thought that Helvetica was the standard typeface of the Subway. But boy was I wrong. A modified version of Akzidenz Grotesk called “Standard Medium” is the typeface that is supposed to be used. Recently, they’ve been using…

Oh Boy, Gotham Rounded!!
Posted by Joe Guzman on February 23, 2007 at 2:26pm
Gotham is one of my favorite typefaces, its well proportioned, comes in a ton of weights, and is just plain elegant. Well H&FJ have released a rounded version of this oh so sexy typeface. I WANT IT!
Gotham Rounded is inspired by the lettering of engineers: marks on precision instruments, lettering on blueprints, and the alphabets of stencils and templates. Drawn, stamped, engraved and routed, Gotham Rounded sensitively captures these forms, offering an eminently usable family of eight…

Population = Dunkin Donuts ?
Posted by Joe Guzman on February 22, 2007 at 2:27pm
My good friend Alex from college did an interesting study for his senior thesis a while back. He plotted fairly random places (Dunkin Donuts, BMW Dealerships, Little League Baseball Fields, and so on) onto a blank map of New England… What he found is pretty freakin’ cool. He puts it way better than I ever could:
If social policy is created based on this data, I can not be held responsible for the potential collapse of one of…

Fried Chicken…another recipe from Joe
Posted by Joe Guzman on January 04, 2007 at 2:32pm

The idea for this came randomly… from me being tired and hungry and dreaming of this BBQ Chicken I made once. So instead of using egg or buttermilk or something to get the flour to stick to the Chicken… I thought, why not use a thick marinade? So that’s what I did. (It’s spicy so watch out!!)
For Marinade:
1/4 cup canned Chipotle Chiles in Adobo Sauce
about 3 tablespoons…

Joe’s Chili Recipe…for those Cold Days
Posted by Joe Guzman on December 17, 2006 at 2:33pm
Its starting (finally) to feel like winter here in NY, so I thought I’d give everyone the one thing that warms me up on a cold day. Here goes:
1 Wooden spoon
1 Large sauce-pot
1.5 pounds Chuck Steak, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
1.5 pounds Pork Shoulder, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
2 links Chorizo sausage, roughly chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
salt
pepper
2 large yellow onions, diced
6 cloves…

Sculpture
Posted by Joe Guzman on November 16, 2006 at 2:36pm

During my college days my roommate (who is from my hometown) and I would create random sculptures using items that we found around campus. Usually when there was an excess of something someplace.
There was one sculpture we made from old tires from behind an abandoned auto shop. Another was a boatload of chairs from an event that was happening the next day.…
