Studio Visit: Artist Amy Helfand
Posted by Elspeth on February 01, 2010 at 10:50am

Recently Bradley and I had the pleasure of hanging out with artist Amy Helfand and her canine companion Jengo at her Redhook-based studio.

Jengo’s a big dog, but still a puppy! We’ll be working with Amy to update her identity and to create a new website which will showcase her artwork.

On Wednesday, Sam and I sashayed over to Bergdorf Goodman to represent the SKAGGS team at the launch of new fragrance collection Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris hosted by KVD NYC .

Francis Kurkdjian is largely known for the fragrances he has created for Jean Paul Gaultier, Yves Saint…

Burlesque Sketch Session in Times Square

Burlesque artiste Little Brooklyn with John Leavitt and Syd Bernstein.
One for the Pigeon Fanciers
What better venue than the “Crossroads of the World” to host the latest burlesque drawing session from Dr Sketchy? Last night as Jessica, Nicole, Robbie and I stepped out from the office to brave the storm I checked to see if Molly Crabapple had rescheduled her impromptu burlesque drawing session due to the torrential rain.

Aerobic Poodles: Remembering Director Nagi Noda
Posted by Elspeth on January 29, 2009 at 4:15pm
Over cupcakes and champagne yesterday evening, we were discussing some of history’s most successful and long-running television ads. Of course, Coca-Cola’s era-defining “Give the World a Coke” campaign came up. It reminded me of director Nagi Noda’s commercial for Coke that plays on the familiar concept of people coming together in “perfect harmony” accompanied by catchy music (in this case, an original ditty by…

Beijing 2008: Design + the Global Response
Posted by Elspeth on August 06, 2008 at 1:41pm

Fubiz turned me on to these beguiling images by Parisian illustrator Jules Julien [note—not work safe]. Does this work imply that within a consumerist culture, we are soon defined by the products we consume? Or that globalization leads to the loss of cultural identity?

Consider just how many brand services and products each of us consume every single day. This…

Color Palette of a Nation
Posted by Elspeth on August 05, 2008 at 1:47pm

Way back in the summer of 2001, I visited my good friends Ping, Li and Mengye in Kunming, capital of China’s Yunnan Province. In July of that year I was in Beijing, where there was widespread excitement about the Olympic bid. When it was announced that Beijing had been chosen, the city erupted into parties, celebrations on the street and a palpable feeling that Beijing’s…

I won’t give away the ending, but this is TV advertising at its best: entertaining and thought-provoking.

Mystery Adventures for Grown-Ups

One of the best things I’ve noticed recently about drawing and cartooning blogs is the growing phenomenon of “discovering” artists and illustrators who might otherwise have slipped into anonymity.
Mystery stories! All of us have an old children’s annual, record sleeve or illustrated cookbook tucked away at the back of the shelf. Did you ever wonder who the illustrator was, and where you might find more work by them?…

Spamland
Posted by Elspeth on April 04, 2008 at 2:08pm
It’s not often that nonsense emails make it past my mighty spam filter, but when they do, I’m reminded of this wonderful series of animations by the Brothers McLeod. They take the semi-sensical text found in the filter-busting portion of spam emails and then create a semi-sensical visual to go with it.
This one’s a monster spam dramatised for your non-sensical pleasure…

Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis
Posted by Elspeth on January 28, 2008 at 2:09pm
![]()
I met and interviewed Marjane Satrapi in October of 2003, when her graphic-novel memoir Persepolis was already a bestseller in France. The comic, the first part of which had recently been translated into English and published as Persepolis: The Story of A Childhood, was the focus of my undergraduate dissertation.
At the time, a major exhibition of her original artwork opened in Ravenna, Italy, where she also taught a comic…

Paint Your Building!

Why not? Add something provocative and beautiful. At SKAGGS, we’re constantly inspired by the variety and innovation of the street art surrounding us in TriBeCa (please stop tagging our door though).
The Grafitti Project takes street art to a whole new level. The idea was to “take the vibrant and often transient art form of Brazilian graffiti out of its predominantly urban context, and apply it to the ancient…

GleamLab
Posted by Elspeth on November 02, 2007 at 2:14pm
GleamLab produces beautiful, dreamy creations exploring the nature of light and the structure of glass with hand-blown sculpture. Their site shows every stage of the process, from concept and research to 3-D modeling, molding and project installation.
Offering a contemporary reinterpretation of a classic building material, we intend to design a unique, provocative aesthetic through the effects of blown glass. This common material affords us the opportunity to manipulate light and…
