ICFF 2010: Amy’s Booth!
Posted by nicole on May 18, 2010 at 8:56am

Since we finished Amy Helfand's portfolio website in the nick of time for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, Elspeth and I decided to pop over to the Jacob Javits Center and take a look at her artwork booth.

It was cool to see the rugs up close–we had been working with Amy's images in digital format for a couple of…

Studio Visit: Artist Amy Helfand
Posted by Elspeth on February 01, 2010 at 10:50am

Recently Bradley and I had the pleasure of hanging out with artist Amy Helfand and her canine companion Jengo at her Redhook-based studio.

Jengo’s a big dog, but still a puppy! We’ll be working with Amy to update her identity and to create a new website which will showcase her artwork.

Burlesque Sketch Session in Times Square

Burlesque artiste Little Brooklyn with John Leavitt and Syd Bernstein.
One for the Pigeon Fanciers
What better venue than the “Crossroads of the World” to host the latest burlesque drawing session from Dr Sketchy? Last night as Jessica, Nicole, Robbie and I stepped out from the office to brave the storm I checked to see if Molly Crabapple had rescheduled her impromptu burlesque drawing session due to the torrential rain.

Beijing 2008: Design + the Global Response
Posted by Elspeth on August 06, 2008 at 1:41pm

Fubiz turned me on to these beguiling images by Parisian illustrator Jules Julien [note—not work safe]. Does this work imply that within a consumerist culture, we are soon defined by the products we consume? Or that globalization leads to the loss of cultural identity?

Consider just how many brand services and products each of us consume every single day. This…

The Revolution will be Fabulous
Posted by newsamyork on May 08, 2008 at 3:36pm

I’m all about random designer luxury goods. Not so much the handbags, umbrellas and cell phone cases. More like KVD’s Chanel Surfboard and my Mark Jacobs Bean Bags (courtesy of Cara). I see them not as luxury goods - but more like works of fashion art. When I came across Peter Gronquist’s latest exhibition at the Gallery 1998 in LA, I positively leapt out of my chair…

David Shrigley

I came across David Shrigley’s work and absolutely love it! While his drawings are my favorites, the photographs are cool too…not sure I’d get a tattoo though.

Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis

I met and interviewed Marjane Satrapi in October of 2003, when her graphic-novel memoir Persepolis was already a bestseller in France. The comic, the first part of which had recently been translated into English and published as Persepolis: The Story of A Childhood, was the focus of my undergraduate dissertation.
At the time, a major exhibition of her original artwork opened in Ravenna, Italy, where she also taught a comic…

I stopped by my favorite cafe on this cold, cold New York morning to get a cup of tea and warm up. Doug, the owner of Le Colombe, served me and told me he had something to show me. He pulled out a book of his photography, which included a series of photos of birds in flight, sitting on power lines and perched on window ledges. The several shots he had in…

The SKAGGS HQ Makeover
Posted by SKAGGS on December 06, 2007 at 12:29pm

Sticking with last months theme of Extreme Makeovers, Elspeth’s post and inspired by some of the most fantastic street art on display throughout Tribeca, we decided to finally — do something — with our fabulous little 2 story building (might we add that it’s one of the only ones left in Tribeca). With the permission of our very cool neighbors downstairs at Province…

Paint Your Building!

Why not? Add something provocative and beautiful. At SKAGGS, we’re constantly inspired by the variety and innovation of the street art surrounding us in TriBeCa (please stop tagging our door though).
The Grafitti Project takes street art to a whole new level. The idea was to “take the vibrant and often transient art form of Brazilian graffiti out of its predominantly urban context, and apply it to the ancient…

GleamLab
Posted by Elspeth on November 02, 2007 at 2:14pm
GleamLab produces beautiful, dreamy creations exploring the nature of light and the structure of glass with hand-blown sculpture. Their site shows every stage of the process, from concept and research to 3-D modeling, molding and project installation.
Offering a contemporary reinterpretation of a classic building material, we intend to design a unique, provocative aesthetic through the effects of blown glass. This common material affords us the opportunity to manipulate light and…

Is David Hockney Losing It?
Posted by Bradley Skaggs on June 18, 2007 at 10:35am

I came across this article and can’t believe what I’m reading. Apparently, David Hockney has a problem with the iPod and believes the ubiquitous music player is contributing to a decline in visual awareness and even making people dress badly. What?
“We are not in a very visual age,” Hockney said. “I think it’s all about sound. People plug in their ears and don’t look much, whereas for…
