Jonina Skaggs
Principal, Art Director
Jonina Skaggs serves as the Art Director “Mama” for SKAGGS. She also provides her signature on all the checks to make sure that her staff can go partying at the hotspots in NYC and also pay off their student loans.
Prior to founding SKAGGS in 1998, she worked at a big-boots agency in San Francisco, where she fought her way through layers of old fart bureaucracy to produce outstandingly creative work. Tired of the big agency boardroom snore-fests and egos, she went to work for a smaller firm where she learned her honorable multitasking and client relations skills.
In her “former life,” Jonina worked at Hermann & Valentiny, an architecture firm in Luxembourg, where she served as a junior project manager/architect. Her work has appeared in Veggfódur (an Icelandic design publication), Print Magazine, Pastry Art and Design, Information Design and Dynamic Graphics by Rockport Publishers as well as Fortune Magazine.
She was named Skuli Postur by her brother and husband for her sometimes clumsy acts of grace: tripping over her laundry bag while carrying it to the laundromat, flying off her scooter, tripping over the cable car tracks in San Francisco in front of hundreds of tourists, and body-surfing down Canal Street during rush hour in New York, to name a few.
Jonina studied Interior Architecture at the Fachhoshule Trier in Germany and then received her MFA in Graphic Design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. She has taught classes in Marketing and Communications for the University of Iceland and Graphic Design at Myndlistaskolinn á Akureyrar (the Arts and Crafts College in Akureyri). Outside of work, Jonina enjoys swimming (especially when visiting Iceland), diving without sharks, Icelandic cuisine, reading and politics.
