Mancunians + Model Mania
Personal, Fashion & Beauty | Monday, December 10th, 2007 @ in the late afternoonI’m a self confessed model fan — Kate, Lily, Gemma, Chanel, Irina and of course Agyness Deyn.
She’s my absolute favorite and not just because she won Model of the Year.…She’s feisty, pixie and punk yet sophisticated and she’s from my home town of Manchester…her infamous cover on POP magazine came with the tagline - “Agyness - The world’s most Mancunian super supermodel.” Nice one lass!
She’s been stomping up a storm on the catwalks of New York, London, Paris and Milan, gracing the covers of many fashion publications, has become the face of various fashion houses and she’s muse to and best pals with Henry Holland. She’s being hailed as the next big thing and one publication labeled her: “Jackie O. crossed with Debbie Harry meets Stevie Nicks”. There’s a definite buzz about Agyness.
All this model mania not only reminds me of the Super Model days of Naomi, Claudia, Cindy, Christy and Linda. and it’s got me thinking what exactly is it about models that gets people (including myself) this excited? There are hundreds of websites, touting the hottest models, a whole blog dedicated to model castings a new Bravo show - “Make Me A Supermodel” and of course who can forget the embarrassingly addictive America’s Next Top Model .
Fashionista had a fantastic post a while back on the success of “alien baby-doll” looking models. And it’s a proven scientific fact that those with symmetrical faces are more attractive which explains Kate Moss. (This site also has a great explanation on the characteristics of a beautiful face and even a test where you can evaluate your beauty ideals). Scientifically there are hundreds of reasons why we find people beautiful/attractive and I’ve found all kinds of googleness on this fact, which has led me to believe that there are a million and one reasons why there is an obsession re:models but most of it, not surprisingly, boils down to beauty.
